Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning ‘universal life energy’. It is comprised of two Kanji characters: Rei meaning ‘God’s wisdom’ or ‘the higher power’; and Ki representing ‘life force energy’. Reiki is a Japanese healing method created by Dr Usui in the early 1900’s. Its popularity has spread all over the world, particularly to America and Western Europe.
Reiki is a gentle, natural, and powerful way to balance the body’s energy. It will give you what you need, whether it is a release of tension or an energy boost. During a session the practitioner’s hands are placed lightly on or over the body focusing on the meridians, the endocrine system and the chakras, transmuting negative energy, releasing blockages and aligning the energy centres within the body. The recipient draws the right amount of energy, either on a conscious or subconscious level to where it is needed.
How can Reiki help you?
When a Reiki practitioner channels this life energy through her hands to the recipient, it activates the body’s natural ability to heal itself. The energy goes to the deepest levels of your being, where illnesses have their origin. It works wherever you need it most, balancing the body’s energies, releasing blockages and cleansing toxins in the body to create harmony and balance. It encourages healing on all levels – physical, mental, spiritual and emotional. It is a powerful tool for personal self-development to help you reach your full potential and make positive changes in your life. It also helps relieve pain and speeds up the healing process of physical problems such as injuries and operations.
What happens during a Reiki treatment?
During a Reiki session the recipient lies fully clothed on a therapy table. The Reiki practitioner will rest her hands lightly on or slightly above different parts of your body focusing on its main energy centres (chakras). You might feel a sensation of heat coming from the practitioner’s hands. The practitioner acts as a channel through which you draw as much energy as you are willing to receive.
Each person experiences Reiki in their way. Some people experience an incredible burst of energy while others might feel the need to go home and sleep. Always make sure you drink plenty of water for a few days following a treatment as it will help to eliminate toxins.
